Cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry, from dentists who show their work.

Anyone can call themselves a cosmetic dentist — it is not a recognised specialty in the United States. So we rank on the things that actually correlate with results: case volume, a real before-and-after portfolio, and published fees.

Free to use. We're paid by verified practices, never by ranking position.

Step 1 — your location

Ten cosmetic dentists near you, ranked in about four seconds.

Because "cosmetic dentist" is not a protected title, we weight this ranking towards evidence: how many cases of this type the practice has completed, whether they publish their own before-and-after gallery, and whether the fee schedule is public.

Your location is used to sort results and is never sold or shared with third parties.

Overview

Start with the cheapest thing that solves your problem.

The most common mistake in cosmetic dentistry is buying more treatment than the problem needs. Discolouration alone is a whitening problem, not a veneer problem. One chipped edge is a bonding problem. Crowding is often an orthodontic problem. Veneers and crowns are irreversible — enamel is removed and never comes back — so they belong at the end of the list, not the start of it.

  • Whitening first, almost always. It is the cheapest, least invasive step, and it sets the shade everything else will be matched to.
  • Bonding before veneers for small chips and gaps. It is reversible, costs a third as much, and can be redone.
  • Straighten before you resurface. Aligners fix position; veneers only disguise it, and at the cost of healthy enamel.
  • Ask to see their own cases — not stock photography or manufacturer marketing. Every practice we list publishes a real gallery.

How a cosmetic case should be run.

The order matters. Practices that skip straight to preparation are the ones that produce results people ask to have redone.

Cosmetic treatment is almost never covered by dental insurance when it is done for appearance alone. Where a crown or a filling is also restoring a broken or decayed tooth, the restorative portion often is covered — so ask the practice to code it accurately rather than assuming the whole case is out of pocket.

What insurance usually covers

  • Purely cosmetic work is excluded on essentially every plan. Whitening and veneers for appearance are out of pocket.
  • Restorative overlap is claimable. A crown on a cracked tooth is restorative even if you also chose a better shade.
  • Night guards are often covered at 50–80% when there is documented grinding — and they protect the work you just paid for.
  • FSA and HSA rules differ from insurance. Restorative work qualifies; purely cosmetic whitening generally does not.

Other ways people pay

  • FSA and HSA funds cover this in full — it is a qualified medical expense.
  • In-house 0% plans at 6–24 months, offered by roughly two-thirds of listed practices.
  • Third-party financing at 24–72 months, typically 9.9%–17.9% APR once the promotional window ends.
  • Dental school clinics run 40–60% below private fees, with longer timelines and supervised residents.

How to judge a practice

Four things that separate a good practice from an average one.

None of this is marketing gloss — each one measurably changes how predictable your result is. Ask the practices you shortlist which of the four they actually have.

No. Unlike orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics, cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty recognised by the American Dental Association, and any licensed dentist may use the term. That is precisely why this list weights measurable things — case volume in the last two years, a published before-and-after gallery of their own work, and a public fee schedule — over titles and logos.

Whiten, then reassess. It is the cheapest and only fully reversible step, it takes two weeks, and it establishes the shade that any later work has to match. A surprising number of people find that whitening plus one or two small bonded repairs is the entire answer, at a tenth of the cost of veneers.

Bonding is right for one to four small defects — a chipped corner, a narrow gap, a worn edge — and it can be done in a single visit without removing enamel. Veneers make sense when you want to change the shape, length or colour of most of the teeth that show when you smile, and you accept that enamel comes off permanently. If a dentist recommends veneers for a single chip, get a second opinion.

Not for treatment done purely for appearance. But the line is not always where people assume: a crown on a cracked tooth is restorative treatment even if you also chose a nicer shade, and it is usually claimable. Ask the practice to code accurately rather than writing the whole case off as cosmetic before it is submitted.

It is a temporary version of the proposed result, transferred into your mouth from the digital design or wax-up so you can see and live with the shape before any preparation happens. Yes, insist on it for anything involving more than two teeth. It is the only point in the process where changes cost you nothing.

A useful benchmark is the whites of your eyes — teeth brighter than that read as artificial in photographs even when they look fine in the mirror under surgery lighting. Ask to see the shade tab in daylight, by a window, and take a photo on your own phone rather than trusting the practice lighting.

Whitening needs a top-up every one to three years. Composite bonding lasts four to eight years before it stains at the margins or chips. Porcelain veneers and crowns run ten to twenty years. All three last considerably longer if you wear a night guard, and considerably less if you grind and do not.

This is why the sequence matters — the design, the trial smile and the try-in stage all exist to make sure you approve the shape before anything is bonded permanently. Ask every practice you shortlist what their written policy is if you are unhappy at try-in. A good answer is that the restorations go back to the lab and are remade at no cost to you.
