Refinements and retainers. Leave either out and a quote looks a thousand dollars cheaper than it is. This page prices the whole thing, then sorts the ten closest providers by what they actually publish.

Overview

The fee is driven by case length, not by brand.

Aligner pricing is essentially a function of how many trays your case needs, which is a function of how far the teeth have to move. A ten-tray case and a sixty-tray case cost the laboratory very different amounts and take the provider very different amounts of chair time. That is why a single advertised price for "aligners" is close to meaningless until someone has scanned your teeth.

  • Ask if refinements are included. Most cases need one round. Excluded, it adds up to $800.
  • Ask if retainers are included. You will need them for life. Excluded, it adds $250 to $700 immediately.
  • Ask what a lost tray costs. Between $50 and $150 each, and most people lose at least one.
  • Ask what happens if the result does not match the simulation. The answer should be more trays at no charge, not a new quote.

The procedure

How to get a number you can actually compare.

Four steps. Doing them in this order stops you comparing a bundled quote against an unbundled one.

01

A phone quote before anyone has seen your teeth is a guess. The scan is usually free and takes five minutes.

What insurance usually covers

  • Orthodontic benefit is a lifetime maximum of $1,000 to $2,500, not an annual allowance.
  • Many plans cover under-19s only. Check the age limit before you assume adult treatment is covered.
  • Aligners and braces are usually paid identically, so choosing aligners rarely costs you benefit.
  • FSA and HSA funds are the adult route. Pre-tax payment often beats any insurance benefit available.

Other ways people pay

  • FSA and HSA funds cover this in full — it is a qualified medical expense.
  • In-house 0% plans at 6–24 months, offered by roughly two-thirds of listed practices.
  • Third-party financing at 24–72 months, typically 9.9%–17.9% APR once the promotional window ends.
  • Dental school clinics run 40–60% below private fees, with longer timelines and supervised residents.

How to judge a practice

Four things that separate a good practice from an average one.

None of this is marketing gloss — each one measurably changes how predictable your result is. Ask the practices you shortlist which of the four they actually have.

Three reasons. First, case complexity genuinely differs — a fourteen-tray case and a fifty-tray case are not the same product, and some providers quote everyone a comprehensive case by default. Second, whether refinements and retainers are inside or outside the fee. Third, geography, which moves the number by up to 25%. Get scanned, get four lines in writing, and the apparent variation shrinks dramatically.

For very mild front-tooth crowding, a short-term cosmetic alignment case at $2,190 to $3,000 in a real practice with real X-rays. Below that price you are into mail-order territory, where no dentist examines you and no radiographs are taken. Metal braces are also frequently cheaper than aligners for complex cases and produce better outcomes — the cheapest good result is not always the invisible one.

If your plan has an orthodontic benefit, usually yes, and generally at the same rate as braces. The critical detail is that orthodontic cover is a lifetime maximum — commonly $1,000 to $2,500 — rather than an annual allowance, and a large share of plans restrict it to patients under nineteen. Call your insurer and ask for the lifetime figure and the age limit specifically.

For adults, very often yes. Orthodontics is a qualified expense, so you are paying with pre-tax money — for most people that is an effective discount of twenty to thirty percent on the entire fee, against a capped orthodontic benefit that may be $1,500 or may not exist at all. If you have both, use the insurance benefit first and the account for the balance.

A short additional series of trays at the end to fine-tune movements that did not finish exactly as the simulation predicted. Most cases need one round; it is normal, not a failure. Good providers include one or two rounds in the fee because they know most cases need them. Providers who exclude refinements are, in effect, quoting for the optimistic version of your treatment.

No. Most providers take a deposit and spread the balance across treatment, and roughly two-thirds offer an in-house 0% plan over twelve to twenty-four months. Third-party financing over 24 to 72 months is also common at 9.9% to 17.9% once any promotional period ends. Use the calculator above to compare — an in-house 0% plan is almost always cheaper than external finance.

Not necessarily, but check what is driving the price. A lower fee because your case is genuinely simple is good news. A lower fee because refinements and retainers are excluded is not a discount, it is a different quote. A much lower fee with no X-rays and no in-person examination is a different product entirely and carries real clinical risk.

It is possible but awkward and usually expensive — the new provider takes on responsibility for a plan they did not design, and will often want to rescan and restart. That is a strong argument for choosing carefully at the outset and for asking every provider what their written policy is if you move house or are unhappy mid-treatment.
