Whitening gel on an untreated cavity or exposed root hurts. A quick examination rules that out.
Visit 1 · 20 minDrugstore strips work a little. Dentist-strength gel in trays moulded to your own teeth works a lot, because the gel stays where it is put. Here are the ten closest practices, with published fees.
Free to use. We're paid by verified practices, never by ranking position.
Whitening is the one cosmetic treatment where price transparency is easy, so we weight published fees heavily — alongside distance, reviews and how quickly they can take your impressions.
Your location is used to sort results and is never sold or shared with third parties.
Peroxide gel breaks down the pigmented molecules that have accumulated inside the tooth over years of coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. The active ingredient is the same at home and at the dentist — what differs is concentration and, crucially, contact. A custom tray moulded from your own impressions holds the gel against enamel for hours; a strip slides and leaks, which is why the results differ so much.
The custom-tray route is slower than an in-office session and produces a more even, longer-lasting result for a fraction of the price.

Visit 1 · 20 minTaken so the laboratory can make trays that fit your teeth exactly, with reservoirs where the gel needs to sit.
Same visit · 15 minYou are shown how much gel to use — far less than people expect — and given a shade record to compare against.
Visit 2 · 20 minTwo to three hours a night, or overnight, for ten to fourteen nights. Alternate nights if you get sensitivity.
2 weeksFinal shade recorded. You keep the trays, so a top-up later costs only the price of a gel syringe.

Years of coffee plus a course of tetracycline. Custom trays with a desensitising gel so she could wear them nightly.
One chairside session for a fast start before a wedding, then two weeks of tray top-ups to even it out.
Whitened first, waited two weeks for the shade to stabilise, then two old crowns were remade to match.
Individual results vary with your diagnosis, anatomy and healing. Fees shown are what those specific patients paid at those specific practices and are not a quote. Photography on this page is licensed stock imagery, not photographs of the patients described.
Ranges below are the 25th–75th percentile of fees published by listed practices. Any dentist we match you with has agreed to give you a written quote before treatment.

Custom trays are the best value in cosmetic dentistry: you keep them, so every future top-up costs the price of a gel syringe rather than a new course. In-office sessions are faster but the result usually settles back within days unless followed by tray wear, which is why most practices sell them together.
Every component on a separate line. It is the only way two quotes ever become comparable, and every practice on this list has agreed to give you one before you pay a deposit.
Drag the sliders to your situation. Nothing is submitted anywhere — this runs entirely in your browser.
Estimates only. Actual approval, APR and term depend on the practice, the lender and your credit. Promotional 0% offers are usually deferred-interest products — if the balance is not cleared inside the promotional window, interest may be charged retroactively from the purchase date. Always read the credit agreement.
All three use peroxide. What separates them is concentration, contact time and how evenly the gel reaches every surface.

None of this is marketing gloss — each one measurably changes how predictable your result is. Ask the practices you shortlist which of the four they actually have.
A practice that turns the monitor towards you and walks through what it is actually seeing is a practice that expects to be questioned.
Ask to see your own scanEvery fee on its own line, handed over before you pay a deposit. Every practice we list has agreed to provide one.

Contact usFive to eight shades is typical for custom-tray whitening on ordinary food-and-drink staining, measured against a standard shade guide. Grey staining from tetracycline or trauma responds far less — sometimes two or three shades — and no honest dentist will promise more before seeing your teeth. Ask for your starting shade to be recorded so the change is measurable rather than remembered.
At the concentrations dentists use, no. Peroxide breaks down pigment molecules inside the tooth; it does not dissolve enamel. What it can do is temporarily increase sensitivity by opening the microscopic tubules in dentine, which is why teeth can feel sharp to cold for a day or two. That reverses within about 48 hours of stopping.
Roughly half of people get some sensitivity. It is caused by peroxide passing through enamel into the dentine below and irritating the nerve. It is temporary and it is manageable: wear the trays for fewer hours, switch to alternate nights, and use a desensitising gel or a potassium nitrate toothpaste for a week beforehand. If a tooth is sharply painful rather than sensitive, stop and get it checked — that is usually an untreated cavity, not the gel.
No. Porcelain and composite are inert — they stay exactly the shade they were made. That is why the correct sequence is always to whiten first, wait two weeks for the shade to stabilise, and then have any visible restorations remade to match. Doing it the other way round means paying twice.
One to three years before most people want a top-up, and the variable is almost entirely lifestyle. Coffee, tea, red wine, curry and tobacco are the main culprits. Because you keep your custom trays, a top-up is two or three nights and the price of a gel syringe rather than a whole new course.
Faster, not better. A chairside session gives a visible result in ninety minutes, which matters if you have an event this week. But some of that change is dehydration that rebounds within a few days, and it costs two to four times as much. Most practices that offer both will recommend a session followed by tray wear if you want speed and durability together.
Yes, if it is dark because it has had root canal treatment. That is called internal or non-vital whitening — gel is sealed inside the tooth for a few days and changed until the shade matches its neighbours. It costs $300–$700 and works well. A single dark tooth that has not been root-treated needs investigating first, because the cause matters more than the colour.
Before veneers or crowns, definitely — the restorations are matched to your final shade, and you cannot change it afterwards. With aligners, most people whiten at the end, because the aligner trays themselves can be used to hold whitening gel and the teeth are in their final positions by then. Tell the dentist your plan at the first appointment either way.
