Medical screening
Full history, medications, allergies and airway assessment. Some conditions rule out certain sedation levels.
Consult · 30 minAround one adult in six avoids the dentist because of fear, and it costs them far more in the end. Three levels of sedation solve very different problems. Here is what each one actually feels like, and who nearby offers it.
Free to use. We're paid by verified practices, never by ranking position.
Not every practice offers every level. Use the sedation filter above, then check which specific type each listing provides — nitrous and IV are very different propositions.
Your location is used to sort results and is never sold or shared with third parties.
Nitrous oxide — laughing gas — takes the edge off, wears off within minutes, and you can drive home. Oral sedation is a tablet taken an hour beforehand that leaves you drowsy and hazy; you will need a lift. IV sedation is administered into a vein and titrated by the dentist during treatment; most people remember essentially nothing and need someone with them for the rest of the day. None of the three is general anaesthesia — you stay conscious and able to respond throughout.
The preparation matters more than the appointment. Practices that skip the medical screening are the ones to avoid.

Before the dayNitrous through a nosepiece, oral as a tablet an hour before, IV through a cannula in the arm or hand.
On the dayOxygen saturation and pulse monitored throughout for oral and IV. A second trained team member present.
Duration of treatmentNitrous: minutes and you drive home. Oral and IV: monitored recovery, then discharged to a responsible adult.
15 min – 2 hrSubmitted by listed practices, with the patient's written release and the fee they actually charged.
IV sedation for a long first appointment covering a deep cleaning and four fillings. Subsequent visits done with nitrous only.
Impressions had been impossible for years. Nitrous made them straightforward and treatment proceeded normally afterwards.
Ninety-minute surgical appointment. No memory of the procedure, discharged after ninety minutes of monitored recovery.
Individual results vary with your diagnosis, anatomy and healing. Fees shown are what those specific patients paid at those specific practices and are not a quote. Photography on this page is licensed stock imagery, not photographs of the patients described.
Ranges below are the 25th–75th percentile of fees published by listed practices. Any dentist we match you with has agreed to give you a written quote before treatment.

Sedation is almost never covered by dental insurance for anxiety alone. It is sometimes covered where there is a documented medical need — a severe gag reflex, certain disabilities, or a genuine phobia diagnosis. Ask the practice whether they will submit it and what documentation your plan requires.
Every component on a separate line. It is the only way two quotes ever become comparable, and every practice on this list has agreed to give you one before you pay a deposit.
Drag the sliders to your situation. Nothing is submitted anywhere — this runs entirely in your browser.
Estimates only. Actual approval, APR and term depend on the practice, the lender and your credit. Promotional 0% offers are usually deferred-interest products — if the balance is not cleared inside the promotional window, interest may be charged retroactively from the purchase date. Always read the credit agreement.
Match the level to the problem. Most people need far less than they assume.

None of this is marketing gloss — each one measurably changes how predictable your result is. Ask the practices you shortlist which of the four they actually have.
A practice that turns the monitor towards you and walks through what it is actually seeing is a practice that expects to be questioned.
Ask to see your own scanEvery fee on its own line, handed over before you pay a deposit. Every practice we list has agreed to provide one.
Non-negotiable on this listSkill compounds with repetition. Each listing shows how many cases of this type the practice has completed in the last two years.
Case counts shown on every cardA named contact for the week after treatment, and a written policy on what a redo costs if something is not right.
Checked at every renewalWe visit or video-audit every practice before it goes on the list — the operatory, the sterilisation room, the imaging suite and the front desk that will handle your insurance claim.

Contact usNo. Nitrous, oral and IV sedation are all forms of conscious sedation — you remain awake and able to respond to instructions throughout. What changes is how much you care and how much you remember. Genuine unconsciousness is general anaesthesia, which is a different procedure carried out in a hospital or surgical centre by an anaesthetist.
For a healthy adult, with proper screening and monitoring, yes — these are well-established techniques with a strong safety record. The safety depends almost entirely on the process around it: a full medical history, appropriate monitoring equipment, a second trained team member in the room, and emergency drugs on hand. Ask specifically what monitoring is used, because that question separates a properly run sedation service from one that is not.
Most people need less than they assume. If your anxiety is mild and the appointment is short, nitrous oxide is usually enough and you can drive yourself home twenty minutes later. Oral sedation suits moderate anxiety and longer visits. IV sedation is for genuine phobia, surgical procedures, or when several hours of treatment need doing in one sitting. A good practice will talk you down the list rather than up it.
After nitrous oxide, yes — it clears within five to ten minutes and there is no lasting impairment. After oral or IV sedation, absolutely not, and you will also need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you. Do not plan to work, sign anything legally binding, or look after small children on your own for the rest of that day.
Yes. Sedation manages anxiety and awareness; it does not block pain. Local anaesthetic is still given, usually once the sedation has taken effect, which is why many people have no memory of the injection at all. That combination is precisely why sedated treatment feels so different from the same treatment without it.
Nitrous oxide is used routinely and safely in children and is often the first choice. Oral and IV sedation for children should be carried out by a practitioner with specific paediatric sedation training, and in some cases treatment under general anaesthetic in a hospital setting is genuinely the safer and kinder route. Ask directly about paediatric experience rather than assuming.
Tell the practice everything, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements. Sedatives interact with a long list of common drugs — certain antidepressants, opioid painkillers, some blood pressure medication and blood thinners among them. This is the main reason a proper pre-sedation medical screening exists, and it is why a practice that offers IV sedation without one should be avoided.
It can genuinely help. Many people use IV or oral sedation for a first long appointment, get their mouth back to health without trauma, and then find they can manage routine visits with nitrous or nothing at all. Sedation buys you a good experience, and a run of good experiences is what actually reduces the fear.
