Porcelain veneers — permanent, so get the design right first.

Veneers are the most transformative thing in cosmetic dentistry and the least reversible. Enamel comes off and does not grow back. These ten practices all design digitally and trial the shape in your mouth before a drill touches anything.

Overview

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front of a tooth.

Roughly 0.3 to 0.7 millimetres of enamel is removed from the front and edge of the tooth, an impression or scan is taken, and a laboratory makes shells that are bonded into place. Done well, veneers change colour, shape, length and the appearance of alignment in one step. Done badly, they look bulky and opaque, and there is no undo — the enamel that was removed is gone, so the teeth will always need something on them from that point onwards.

  • You are a good candidate if your teeth are healthy, your gums are healthy, and your complaint is about shape, colour or minor alignment.
  • Straighten first if you are crowded. Aligners move teeth into position so the veneers can be thin. Veneering crooked teeth means removing much more enamel.
  • A night guard is not optional if you grind. Porcelain is strong in compression and brittle in shear — grinding is how veneers chip.
  • Ask what happens at try-in if you do not like them. The right answer is that they go back to the lab and are remade at no cost.

The procedure

Three to five weeks, and one point of no return.

Everything before preparation is reversible. Everything after it is not. That is why the trial smile stage exists and why you should not let anyone skip it.

Per-tooth pricing varies with the laboratory and the technique. Hand-layered feldspathic veneers cost more than pressed ceramic and look better in the front four teeth; pressed is stronger and perfectly good further back. Ask which your quote assumes — it is the single biggest variable in a veneer fee.

What insurance usually covers

  • Veneers for appearance are excluded on essentially every dental plan.
  • A veneer replacing lost tooth structure after a fracture is sometimes claimable as restorative work. Ask for it to be coded accurately.
  • The night guard often is covered at 50–80% where grinding is documented — and it protects a five-figure investment.
  • FSA and HSA funds generally cannot be used for purely cosmetic veneers. Check with your administrator before you assume.

Other ways people pay

  • FSA and HSA funds cover this in full — it is a qualified medical expense.
  • In-house 0% plans at 6–24 months, offered by roughly two-thirds of listed practices.
  • Third-party financing at 24–72 months, typically 9.9%–17.9% APR once the promotional window ends.
  • Dental school clinics run 40–60% below private fees, with longer timelines and supervised residents.

Veneers, bonding or crowns?

All three cover the front of a tooth. They differ enormously in how much tooth they take, what they cost, and how long they last.

How to judge a practice

Four things that separate a good practice from an average one.

None of this is marketing gloss — each one measurably changes how predictable your result is. Ask the practices you shortlist which of the four they actually have.

Typically 0.3 to 0.7 millimetres from the front surface and edge — roughly the thickness of a fingernail. Minimal-prep and no-prep veneers exist and remove less or nothing, but they only work when the teeth are already well positioned and not too large. If a dentist promises no-prep veneers on crowded teeth, they are either going to make them bulky or quietly prepare more than they said.

The veneers themselves last ten to twenty years, but the decision is permanent regardless. Once enamel has been removed the tooth will always need a veneer or crown on it. That is the single most important thing to understand before you start, and it is why every practice on this list runs a trial smile stage.

It depends on how wide your smile is, not on a standard number. The usual answer is six, eight or ten — enough to cover every tooth visible when you smile broadly, so there is no visible colour step at the edges. Photograph your own smile at full width and count. Four veneers on a wide smile line is the most common cause of an obviously "done" result.

Only if they are designed that way. The three things that make veneers look artificial are excessive whiteness, uniform length across every tooth, and too much opacity. Ask to see the practice's own gallery — not manufacturer marketing — and look specifically at whether the front teeth are slightly longer than the ones beside them and whether the edges have any translucency.

The porcelain itself does not — it is glass, and it is impervious to coffee, tea and red wine. What can discolour over years is the thin line of bonding cement at the gum margin, particularly if you smoke. That is a cleanable and, if necessary, repairable problem rather than a reason to remake the veneers.

Small chips can sometimes be polished or repaired with composite in a single visit. A significant fracture means remaking that veneer, which involves removing the old one and taking a fresh impression — usually two visits and the per-tooth fee again. Shade-matching one new veneer against nine older ones is genuinely difficult, which is another argument for a night guard.

The veneers will not change colour, so whitening afterwards only lightens the teeth around them and can create a mismatch. This is why the sequence is always whiten first, settle on a shade, then make veneers to match. If you are planning both, tell the dentist at the first appointment.

Brush and floss exactly as normal — the gum margin is where problems start, so flossing matters more, not less. Wear a night guard if you grind. Avoid using your front teeth to open packaging or bite hard objects. See a hygienist twice a year and ask them to use a non-abrasive paste, because standard prophy paste can dull the glaze over time.
