Invisalign in California: what the price depends on, and who near you does it
There is no published Invisalign price in California. We checked all 29,110 licensed dental practices in the state, including 1,544 orthodontists, and not one publishes a fee. What the number depends on is almost entirely how far your teeth have to move — the gap between a simple case and a complex one is wider than any gap between cities. The useful question is not what it costs on average, but how many orthodontists are close enough for you to get two opinions.

This page used to carry a table of Invisalign prices by California metro. We have taken it down for the same reason we took down the implant one: we could not show you where the numbers came from. We hold a record for every licensed practice in the state and we checked every one of them. None publishes a fee for clear aligners, or for anything else.
What the price actually depends on
Clear aligner treatment is quoted per case, and the thing that moves the quote most is the number of aligners your plan needs — which is a direct function of how far the teeth travel and in which directions.
- How much movement. A mild relapse after childhood braces may be ten or twelve aligners. A crowded arch needing expansion and rotation can be forty or more, and each one is a manufactured appliance.
- Whether attachments and interproximal reduction are needed, which add chair time rather than laboratory cost.
- Whether one arch or both are being treated. A single-arch case is substantially less, and plenty of cases only need one.
- Refinements. Most courses end with a second scan and a short set of corrective aligners; whether those are included or billed is the single most common surprise in an aligner quote.
- Retainers afterwards, and for how long they are replaced free.
How many orthodontists are actually near you
This is the part we can count precisely. Every dentist below holds a current California licence and registered orthodontics as their specialty on the federal provider register. General dentists also provide aligners — more of them than orthodontists do — but the register cannot count that, so this is the floor rather than the whole market.
| City | Practices listed | Orthodontists | Per 100 practices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Irvine | 398 | 33 | 8.3 |
| Fresno | 511 | 31 | 6.1 |
| Long Beach | 350 | 21 | 6.0 |
| Bakersfield | 373 | 22 | 5.9 |
| San Diego | 1,394 | 79 | 5.7 |
| Riverside | 365 | 19 | 5.2 |
| San Jose | 994 | 49 | 4.9 |
| San Francisco | 966 | 46 | 4.8 |
| Los Angeles | 2,044 | 94 | 4.6 |
| Oakland | 339 | 14 | 4.1 |
| Torrance | 379 | 15 | 4.0 |
| Anaheim | 315 | 11 | 3.5 |
| Sacramento | 786 | 22 | 2.8 |
| Santa Ana | 303 | 8 | 2.6 |
Irvine has three times the orthodontist density of Santa Ana, twenty minutes away. That is not a statement about quality; it is a statement about how easily you can get a second opinion without taking a day off, and a second opinion is the only reliable way to find out whether a quote is reasonable.
Aligners against fixed braces
Both move teeth. The honest differences are these, and none of them is a price:
- Aligners are removable, which is their main advantage and their main failure mode — they only work for the hours they are in.
- Fixed braces do not depend on compliance, and remain more predictable for large rotations, significant vertical movement and some bite corrections.
- Aligner cases need fewer, shorter appointments, which matters if taking time off is expensive for you.
- For a mild to moderate case in a compliant adult, the clinical outcomes are comparable and the choice is genuinely about preference.
What insurance does
Orthodontic cover is usually a separate lifetime maximum rather than part of the annual one, commonly $1,000 to $2,500, and many plans apply it only up to a certain age. Where a plan covers orthodontics at all it generally treats aligners and fixed braces identically, so the choice between them rarely changes what you receive.
Ask your insurer for a pre-treatment estimate in writing before you commit. Of the 1,659 California practices whose own treatment and insurance pages we were able to read, 826 name clear aligners among the treatments they provide — that is a count of what practices publish, not a survey of the state.
Questions worth asking at the consultation
- How many aligners is my plan?
- Are refinements included, and how many rounds?
- Does the price include retainers, and for how long are they replaced?
- Will you be treating me, or is the plan sent out and supervised?
- How many aligner cases do you finish in a year?
- What happens if the teeth do not track — do we switch to braces, and at what cost?
Take the answers to a second practice and ask them to quote the same six lines. That comparison is worth more than any average price on any website, including this one.
Common questions
How much is Invisalign in California?
Nobody publishes a figure. We checked all 29,110 licensed practices in the state, including 1,544 orthodontists, and not one publishes a price for clear aligners. The quote depends mostly on how many aligners your case needs, which comes out of the scan.
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
Not reliably. For comparable cases the two are usually quoted close together, and the case complexity moves the number far more than the appliance does. Where a plan covers orthodontics it almost always covers both the same way.
Does dental insurance cover clear aligners?
Often, under a separate orthodontic lifetime maximum of roughly $1,000 to $2,500, sometimes with an age limit. Ask for a pre-treatment estimate in writing — the estimate, not the summary of benefits, is what binds.
Can I use an at-home aligner service instead?
It is a different product. Treatment planned without an in-person examination and an x-ray cannot account for root position or bone level, and both the ADA and the California Dental Association have cautioned about it. The lower price buys a narrower service.
